Christian rock group Third Day Abbotsford’s new entertainment

January 20, 2009 – 5:32 pm

The news that Christian rock group Third Day will perform the first date at Abbotsford’s new entertainment and sports centre is just the start of a series of announcements expected in the coming weeks.

That’s according to Trey Bell, the general manager for the 8,500-seat building, who confirmed yesterday that the multi-platinum selling band will be making a stop in Abbotsford on May 9.

Having sold more than six million albums worldwide, Third Day has garnered 25 number-one singles during its 17-year career, and also won numerous Grammy and Dove awards. Last year, the band won the 2008 American Music Award for Favourite Contemporary Inspirational Artist.

“They are a very popular band – I expect it to sell out,” said Bell.

Describing Third Day as a “world-class production,” Bell said Global Spectrum, the company managing the arena, is now hoping to secure a major name for the grand opening of the centre – although that may happen after the Third Day concert.

Looking beyond that, Bell said that a monster truck show has also also been booked for May. Pro wrestling, a production of Jesus Christ Superstar and then a show by the Lippizaner Stallions will follow shortly after, he said.

There are many other tentative bookings by different entertainers, Bell continued, explaining it will now be a case of confirming as many of those as possible before the entertainment and sports centre launches its official website on Jan. 26.

“As we expected, this is going to be a strong venue,” Bell said yesterday.

“It’s going to have more than its share of shows and it’s going to be very positive for the community. They (residents) are going to be able to go out of their homes and get entertainment without having to travel.”

Despite global economic issues, Bell believes the entertainment and sports centre in Abbotsford will “invigorate the community from an entertainment perspective.”

“The economy is going to be back, and because we are a midsize venue, it’s a good size to be when you are going through economic swings,” he said.

Tickets for the Abbotsford Third Day concert start at $19.99 before fees and charges. Brandon Heath and Revive are booked as guests for the show.
