NDChristian music industry phenomenon Matt Maher (pronounced Mar) entertained and engaged packed audiences at the University of Mary’s annual Prayer Day, Feb. 4 and 5. The internationally acclaimed former youth minister who has performed before the Pope and become one of the world’s most popular Catholic recording artists performed a free concert at the McDowell Activity Center Feb. 4 and spoke to a standing-room only crowd Feb. 5, as the 2009 Prayer Day keynote speaker.

In his talk, entitled “Prayer and the Art of Living,” Maher delivered a powerful message about the need to communicate with God in order to communicate with other people and the importance of integrating prayer and how this contributes to making one’s life a work of art. Appealing to the diverse audience of students and members of the surrounding community, Maher interwove his personal faith journey with biblical references, while urging listeners to accept God’s unconditional love, realize their Christian identity, and seek a personal exchange with God through prayer.

Maher’s newest album ” Empty and Beautiful ,” released in April of 2008, has reached No. 55 on the iTunes chart and No. 2 on the Christian and Gospel Album chart. His title track has climbed the charts and the song “Your Grace is Enough” has reached No. 4 on the Billboard music chart. A link to his music can be found at: http://www.myspace.com/mattmahermusic.

“Maher’s prayerful music has energized events around the world, from World Youth Days and national conventions to local concerts,” said Kristi Wanner, director of Campus Ministry at the University of Mary. “We were blessed to be able to have him share his gifts with us in this two-day celebration.”

Maher’s presentation was followed by a luncheon, workshops and Eucharistic liturgy presided over by Bishop Paul Zipfel
