Timothy Wright godfather of gospel music

May 6, 2009 – 9:13 am
Gospel hits ringing in their ears, mourners gathered Monday to remember Brooklyn pastor Rev. Timothy Wright and said the " godfather of gospel music " would live on in his songs. "They'll never forget you," said the Rev. Al Sharpton during a "homegoing ceremony" at Pilgrim Baptist Church. "As long as there's music, they'll be singing your song." More than 3,000 people lined up around the block to say goodbye to Wright, 61. He died last month from injuries caused by a head-on car collision in Pennsylvania that killed his wife Betty, 58, and his 14-year-old grandson D.J. nearly a year ago. Mourners honored the Grammy-nominated gospel singer during the four-hour service by singing several of his songs, including "Jesus, Jesus, Jesus," which was released in 2007. Wright's son, David, said he was grateful that his father left a mark on the world with his music. "Thank God for a legacy that lives on," he ...

Kari Jobe

April 4, 2009 – 5:45 pm
Christian music is huge, but it is not mainstream. Information about Christian entertainment is largely confined to established Christian publications, radio, syndicated television and the Internet. Kari Jobe is catching the attention of the growing number of blogs dedicated to Christian music and other interests. While she has performed on recordings as a part of other projects, her first solo CD was released in February. It immediately went to the top of iTunes charts and debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard Christian album chart. A favorite of bloggers is her “Revelation Song,” with many comparing the work favorably to that of other Christian singers tackling similar themes. Kari’s anthem is unique in its richness and one suspects from listening to it and other songs on the debut that she is in the process of crafting music that will place her in a league of her own. Songs on the album range from elaborate arrangements ...

MercyMe to perform April 4 at Ford Center

March 31, 2009 – 9:22 am
These days, the number 10 has multiple significance for the popular Christian rock band MercyMe. It’s been 10 years since the group’s song "I Can Only Imagine” was released, springing to the top of the music charts and providing the band with an inspirational crossover hit. "It has stood the test of time,” MercyMe guitarist Barry Graul said during a recent telephone interview. In celebration of the song’s anniversary, fans can see the Dove Award-winning group in concert for a recession-savvy $10. Plus, MercyMe has just released a compilation of 10 of its No. 1 hits on an album appropriately called "10.” MercyMe, which has Oklahoma ties, is bringing its "Rock and Worship Road Show” to the Ford Center on April 4. Recording artists touring with the group include Jeremy Camp, Hawk Nelson, Tenth Avenue North and Addison Road. Graul said the response to the first concerts on the tour has been fantastic. The ...

MercyMe Glenwood grad

March 31, 2009 – 9:18 am
The biggest moment so far in Kelsey Sowards’ young music career came at the church where, days earlier, a homicide occurred that made national news. Sowards, a Glenwood High School graduate, is one of four finalists in a singing contest sponsored by Christian music radio station WIBI-FM (90.5 in Springfield). The winner will get to perform as an opening act during a concert April 19 in Springfield featuring superstar contemporary Christian pop group MercyMe . The winner also could hear his or her recording on the radio in the future, and even be evaluated by record label talent scouts. But to land that slot, Sowards and seven other semifinalists had to win over a crowd gathered at, of all places, First Baptist Church in Maryville. That’s the church where the Rev. Fred Winters was shot and killed March 8. The performance to determine the finalists was later that same week. “When we got ...

Frank Scott Christian Rap

March 31, 2009 – 9:15 am
Nate Allen finally listened to what other people and his heart had been telling him for years: Rap. Frank Scott is finally doing something he knew he would do all along: Make an album. The two joined forces to become, Incorruptible Alliance, a Christian hip hop duo , and they're releasing their first E.P. Incorruptible on June 6, spreading the message of living an incorruptible life through Jesus Christ. It's a CD anyone can listen to since it's profanity-free, doesn't promote alcohol use, drugs, sex before marriage, or any other immoral or vulgar things found in most secular music. "The music itself is really the hook," said Allen, 28, also known as Merse on stage. "It's the message in between the lines. We want that lifestyle to be an example. Psalm 101 is a road map for lifestyle. You'll find that woven throughout our music." Even without an official album out on the streets, the ...

United Tour Steven Curtis Chapman and Michael W. Smith

March 31, 2009 – 9:10 am
Christian music stars Steven Curtis Chapman and Michael W. Smith have teamed up for a second round of dates for their " United Tour " – the historic joint tour they kicked off last fall that reached a cumulative audience of more than 50,000 in 20 major markets. The new monthlong tour, which kicked off Saturday in Chattanooga, Tenn., will showcase two of Christian Music’s most recognized and beloved artists, who together have garnered a staggering eight Grammy awards, 96 Dove Awards, 77 No. 1 singles and more than 30 Gold and Platinum albums. The idea for the joint tour came shortly after Chapman and Smith spent time together in the United Kingdom last year working on the “Compassionart project,” which brought more than 10 of Christian Music’s most revered singers, songwriters and worship leaders together to write and record a collection of songs for charity. "Michael and Steven have ...
