Philmont Forefront Records

August 26, 2008 – 9:57 am

Up and coming new Forefront Records Christian music act, Philmont , coming out of Charlotte, North Carolina are already creating a buzz with their punk/rock style. In this interview, Philmont ’s Scott Taube and Josiah Prince speak to STREETBRAND about the group and what we can expect from their new album.

SB: Tell us a bit about the band.
JP: We’re a group of fun-loving guys who get a kick out of travelling the country playing rock and roll while ministering to the kids we encounter at our shows.

SB: How long have you been a band? Introduce band members and what they do.
ST: Well Philmont has been alive and kicking for about three years now. We consist of Scott Taube (lead vocals and guitar), Josiah Prince (lead guitar, keys and backing vocals), Justin Sams (Bass and backing vocals) and Todd Davis (drums). We all played in other local bands in Charlotte, NC for years before parting ways and starting Philmont.

SB: Why are you called Philmont ?
JP: I wish we had a better answer for this one but we don’t- We just liked the name!

SB: Tell us about your new Christian music album Oh Snap, what can we expect from it?
ST: Oh Snap (available on iTunes or wherever you buy digital media on Aug 19) is just a taste of our debut full length due out in early 2009. It’s five songs that we’re super proud of and can’t wait to share with the world. The music is fun and the lyrics and ideas are thoughtful.

SB: What would you say are your musical influences?
JP: Individually we have a wide range of influences but as a band we draw a lot of influence from bands like Relient K, Anberlin and Emery.

SB: How would you describe your sound?
ST: I’d describe our sound as being good old rock and roll with some pop/punk flare and synthy dance elements thrown in. It’s familiar and catchy, but still unique.

SB: What message/s do your want to put across in your music ?
JP: If there’s one message we want kids to take from our music it’s that - You can’t do it by yourself! So many of our songs deal with giving up control of your life to God. Too often we try to manipulate situations and steer towards what we imagine is the best outcome - it’s exhausting and pointless. If we learn to trust God and give Him control of our lives, He’ll make sure we’re taken care of (financially, physically and emotionally) If something’s on your mind…give it up to God- it’s that simple!

SB: What can we expect from you in the future?
ST: We’ll be releasing “Oh Snap” on August 19th then touring that for a while (we’re hitting the road with Pillar, Addison Road and Our Hearts Hero in Sept). Our debut full length with Forefront Records is due out in early 2009 so be watching for that as well. We hope to tour that heavily and, come next summer, we hope to be playing a lot of the festivals.

SB: Tell our readers about Jesus, why should they care?
JP: The simple version of it is that Jesus came down to this earth some thousand of years ago and died a horrible death so that sinners like me and you can spend eternity in heaven. All you have to do to receive this gift is to ask Him to be the Lord and Saviour of your life. It’s the best decision you’ll ever make.

SB: What one thing would you want our UK based STREETBRAND readers to know about Philmont ?
ST: Well, none of us have ever been to the UK. But we’d love to come! So mail us a few plane tickets and we’ll fly right over and put on a show for you!
